Sun Wukong ki shuruat ek jadui patthar se hoti hai jo mountain top par phat jata hai aur ek anokha bandar paida hota hai. Wo baaki bandaron se alag aur had se zyada tez tha. Apni mehnat aur immortality (amar hone) ki talash mein wo ajeeb shaktiyan seekhta hai—jaise 72 tarah ke roop badalna (shapeshifting), badalon par udna, aur ek aisa sota (staff) paana jo apna size badal kar chota ya vishal ho sakta hai. Use "Great Sage, Heaven's Equal" kaha jata hai, lekin uski sabse badi kamzori uska ghamand tha.

Jab Sun Wukong ko swarg (Heaven) mein izzat nahi milti, toh wo wahan aatank macha deta hai. Wo devtaon ke phal (Peach of Immortality) kha jata hai aur unki saari sena ko akela hara deta hai. Uska ghamand itna badh gaya tha ki wo Buddha ko bhi challenge kar deta hai. Buddha use apni hatheli mein kaid kar lete hain aur ek pahad (Five Elements Mountain) ke neeche 500 saal ke liye band kar dete hain. Ye uske liye ek sabak tha ki asli shakti dimaag aur dil ki shanti mein hoti hai.

500 saal baad, ek bhikshu (monk) Xuanzang use azad karta hai ek shart par—ki Wukong use India (West) se pavitra granth lane mein madad karega. Is safar mein unke saath Pigsy aur Sandy bhi hote hain. Ye Wukong ke liye ek mouka tha apne paapon ka prayashchit karne ka. Raste mein wo khatarnak demons aur jadugaron se ladta hai, lekin ab wo sirf apni taqat ke liye nahi balki apne master ki raksha ke liye ladta hai. Uska ghamand dheere-dheere samajh aur sabr mein badalne lagta hai.
